50 Years Ago Today In 1975 - Glen Campbell's Capitol Records single "Rhinestone Cowboy" is certified Gold by the R.I.A.A.

1976 - Frank Sinatra, performing on The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, surprises everyone when he brings out Dean Martin. It is the first public re-uniting of former Capitol Records duo Martin and Lewis since their breakup in 1956. I remember watching this happen in the wee hours of the morning as I was up all night working on a art project. Fortunately, they re-ran the event many times during the rest of the Telethon so my parents, who were asleep (as was most of the country) when it happened, got to see the reunion. Sinatra was beaming and Dean and Jerry played it hilariously low key like it had been only a few days since they last talked versus 20 years.

1978 - Tavares (lineup unlisted) records the titles "Let Me Heal The Bruises" and "Games, Games" in Los Angeles, California. Capitol Records will issue both titles on the group's album "Madam Butterfly" (SW-11874).

1983 - Zappacosta (producer Alfie Zappacosta on vocals and guitar, Steve Jensen also on guitar, Gerald O'Brien and Peter Boynton on keyboards, Mitch Starkman on bass, and Paul Delaney on drums), using arrangements by Gerald O'Brien, records the titles "Runaround", "I'll Give It A Go", "Light In Your Way", "Katy's Eyes", and "Start Again" in an unlisted studio. 1957 - Pianist Leonard Pennario has a rehearsal session, with Erich Leinsdorf conducting The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (lineup unlisted), of Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto N° 1" and Grieg's "Piano Concerto In A Minor" in Los Angeles, California for a recording session to be held the next day, September 4, 1957, for Capitol Records.

1968 - Al Jardine, on his 26th birthday, and the rest of The Beach Boys, laid down the basic tracks for "We're Together Again" in Los Angeles, California. Even after overdubs were recorded on September 5 and 6, 1968, the song will remain unissued until Capitol Records first releases it as a bonus track on the double album CD "Friends/20-20" (7-93697-2).

1968 - Ringo Starr rejoins The Beatles after quitting during sessions for their album "The Beatles" (aka "The White Album") and finds his drum kit decked out in flowers by Mal Evans and the instigation of George Harrison. Ringo didn't record anything at the studio that day but George spent the entire day recording a backwards guitar solo for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" which was never used.

1982 - Capitol Records registers the masters for McFadden & Whitehead's titles "One More Time", "Without You", "Tired Of Your Lies", "Are You Lonely", "Not With Me", "Movin' On", "Everything I Do", "Trying To Get Back (To The Love I Lost), "Riding The Crest", and "The Best Of Me" in Los Angeles, California and will issue all the titles on the duo's album "Movin' On" (ST-12251), "Are You Lonely" and "Riding The Crest" together as a single, and an edited version of "One More Time" and "The Best Of Me" together as a single (Capitol 5176).

The show was founded by Deirdre O'Donoghue and hosted by her until her death in 2001 and is currently hosted by Chris Carter. The show would later return to the air in November 2006 and currently airs on Sundays from 9AM to Noon on station KLOS 95.5.

I did the same for others in the "Definitive American Songbook" series which initially was only available as part of an infomercial promotion that was hosted by Andy Williams around Thanksgiving 2004. The benefit concerts, billed as One to One, also featured other performers in addition to Lennon, including Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Melanie Safka and Sha-Na-Na, although their performances are not included on this album, nor on the simultaneous video release.

1965 - Capitol Records president Alan Livingston presents The Beatles gold records for their soundtrack album "Help!" at the end of a press conference that was recorded for possible use as a promotional record, and also filmed. Later that night, The Beatles perform the first of two concerts at The Hollywood Bowl that will happen over two consecutive nights. Recordings of some of these performances will appear when Capitol Records releases "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" in 1977.

1966 - The Beatles perform their last live concert in the United States with a show at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California. The last song was "Long Tall Sally." At Paul McCartney's request, the audio of the show was recorded to tape.

1967 - Vocalist and guitarist Wynn Stewart, with Robert Jim Pierce on piano, Phil Baugh and Tommy Collins on guitars, Jimmie Collins on steel guitar, Dennis Dean Hromek on bass, and David William Allen on drums, records the titles "Make Big Love" and "Waltz Of The Angels" in The Capitol Tower Studios at 1750 North Vine Street in Hollywood, California between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. After Wynn Steward records vocal and guitar overdubs for "Waltz Of The Angels" on August 31, 1967, Capitol Records will issue both titles on Stewart's album "Love's Gonna Happen To Me" (T/ST 2849) and "Waltz Of The Angels" as a single (Capitol 2012) with "Love's Gonna Happen To Me" (recorded August 31, 1967) on the flipside.

1972 - Johnny Cunningham, with unlisted others, records the titles "Mr. Jerome", "You Take The Blame For The Roses", "Orphan Ford", and "Country Child" in Los Angeles, California. Capitol Records will issue "You Take The Blame For The Roses" as a single (Capitol 3489) with "I Can Feel The Heartache Comin' On" (recorded April 17, 1972) on the flipside and has yet to issue any of the other three titles.

1977 - Vocalist Natalie Cole, with unlisted others, records the titles "Nothing Stronger Than Love" and "Be Thankful" at The Capitol Tower Studios in 1750 North Vine Street in Hollywood, California. After overdubs for "Nothing Stronger Than Love" are recorded on September 19, 20, 21, and 22, 1977 and for "Be Thankful" on August 29, September 20, 21, and 22, 1977, Capitol Records will issue both titles on Cole's album "Thankful" (SW-11708).

2006 - The limited 40th Anniversary edition of The Beach Boys' Capitol Records album "Pet Sounds" is due in stores in both a 2 disc green vinyl version and a CD/DVD set with extras.

2025 - Capitol Records releases Bo Staloch's single "Born To".
