1952 - During two sessions held this day in Los Angeles, California, trumpet player Ray Anthony and His Orchestra (Bruce Brukert, Dean Hinkle, Knobby Lee, and Jack Laubach also on trumpets, Keith Butterfield, Walter Shields, Ken Trimble, and Dick Reynolds on trombones, Earl Bergman and Jim Schneider on clarinets and alto saxophones, Buddy Wise and Billy Usselton on tenor saxophones, Leo Anthony on alto and baritone saxophones, Fred Savarise on piano, Vince Terri on guitar, Billy Cronk on bass, and Archie Freeman on drums), record the titles "Blue Jeans" and, with an arrangement by George Williams, "Street Scene" at the first session and the titles "Trees", "People In Love" with vocals by Tommy Mercer and The Anthony Choir (lineup unlisted), and "On The Trail" at the second session. Capitol Records will issue "Blue Jeans" on Anthony and the orchestra's EP album "Saddle Shoe Shuffle" (EAP-1-557), "Street Scene" as a single (Capitol 2327) with "On The Trail (From 'Grand Canyon Suite')" (the version re-recorded on October 27, 1952) and on Anthony's album "Concert" (T 406), "People In Love" as a single (Capitol 2293) with "Idaho" (recorded September 3, 1952) on the flipside, and have yet to issue "Trees" and the take of "On The Trail" recorded on this date.
1952 - Vocalist Frances Faye, with Dave Cavanaugh's Music and Orchestra (lineup unlisted), records the titles "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate", "My Last Affair", "When Love Comes Knocking At Your Door", and "She Looks" in Los Angeles, California. Capitol Records will issue "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" and "She Looks" together as a single (Capitol 2278), "My Last Affair" as a single (Capitol 2347) with "On A Raft (In The Middle Of The Ocean" (recorded August 1, 1952) on the flipside, and have yet to issue "When Love Comes Knocking At Your Door".

55 Years Ago Today In 1963 - During two sessions held this day at Western Studios in Los Angeles, California, The Beach Boys (vocalists Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Denis Wilson, and Al Jardine), with unlisted guitar and drums players, record the titles "Ballad Of Ole' Betsy" with Brian Wilson on lead vocals, "Be True To Your School" with Mike Love on lead vocals, "Car Crazy Cutie", and "Cherry, Cherry Coupe" at the first session and the titles "Spirit Of America", "No-Go Showboat", "A Young Man Is Gone", and "Custom Machine" at the second session. Capitol Records will issue all the titles on the group's album "Little Deuce Coupe" (T/ST 1998).

1977 - Vocalist Natalie Cole, with unlisted others, records the titles "I Just Can't Stay Away" and "I'm Right, He's Wrong" in Los Angeles, California. After overdubs for "I Just Can't Stay Away" are recorded on September 6, 7, 20, 21, and 22, 1977, Capitol Records will issue the title on Cole's album "Thankful" (SW-11708), after the title is edited as a single (Capitol 4572) with an edited version of "Annie Mae" (recorded August 30, 1977) on the flipside.

15 Years Ago Today In 2003 - Liberty Records, revived as a name by EMI Music for catalog product, releases the compilation CDs "The Best Of The Definitive American Songbook A-I" and "The Best Of The Definitive American Songbook J-Z". I helped research the history of the songs and recordings for the packages' liner notes. I did the same for others in the "Definitive American Songbook" series which initially was only available as part of an infomercial promotion that was hosted by Andy Williams around Thanksgiving 2004. At least 5 volumes were later released to brick and mortars.
